what gauge wire to use when installing a wireless thermostat?

I am wiring the sensor (equipment interface module) to the the heat/ac unit. It is a class 2 remotethermostat. what gauge wire should i use for this
Usually 24 ga is standard from the remote receiver (where the old thermostat as mounted) to the control board of the heat/ac unit.
