Is it illegal to take off a starter interrupt device that somene put on my car?

This shady dealer I unfourtunately bought my has shut my starter off onseveral occasions.I am ahead on my payments, but He did it today when I had to pull over on a freeway,I had my son in the car.I had no cell phone and had to walk on the free way with

If your contract with the dealership states that the starter interrupt device must be in service as long as there is an outstanding loan on the car ... removing the device would violate the contract.
